Sun International Makes Triumphant Return to Botswana

Hospitality and gaming giant, Sun International, is set to re-establish its presence in Botswana after acquiring a significant stake in Peermont Global Botswana (PGB). The company’s return comes after a seven-year absence from the country.

The South African-based group will now hold a 40% share in PGB, which operates prominent properties such as the Grand Palm and Peermont Mondior in Gaborone, as well as the Peermont Metcourt Hotel & Sedibeng Casino in Francistown. This acquisition follows Sun International’s purchase of Peermont Holdings in December 2023.

However, the Competition and Consumer Authority (CCA) has imposed conditions on the deal due to concerns about Sun International’s dominant position in the local casino market. The company is obligated to retain all existing employees, prioritize local suppliers, and provide regular documentation on employee numbers for the next three years.

Despite these conditions, Sun International’s return to Botswana is expected to stimulate the tourism and hospitality sectors. The company’s reputation for world-class entertainment and accommodation is anticipated to attract both domestic and international visitors.
