The Life and Times of Soul Brothers through the eyes of Black Moses Ngwenya.

The iconic Mbaqanga group Soul Brothers from KwaZulu-Natal is set to mark their journey and musical legacy with the release of a captivating memoir titled “The Life and Times,” written by Sydney Maluleke. The book provides an intimate glimpse into the Soul Brothers’ history, music, and essence, shedding light on their rise, challenges, and indelible mark on the world of music.

The book launch will take place on September 3, 2023, at the prestigious Joburg Theatre. The event will be unforgettable since the band will be performing live, bringing the audience on a musical trip through their iconic repertoire. The events are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and last until late at night, guaranteeing an immersive experience for all guests.

Moses Ngwenya, the sole surviving original member of Soul Brothers, expressed his pleasure over the book’s release. He emphasized that the memoir is not only a monument to the band’s heritage, but also a testament to the dedication of the late band members with whom he embarked on this musical adventure. Ngwenya expressed his hope that the book will act as a bridge between generations, introducing future listeners to the band’s tremendous influence and the unique genre of umbhaqanga.

“The Life and Times” author and publisher Sydney Maluleke provided insights into the book’s content and aim. The memoir digs further into the Soul Brothers’ formation, discography, record production, the problems of losing members, and the reasons for their moniker “Kings of Mbaqanga.” The book expertly recounts this history via the viewpoint of Moses Ngwenya, co-founder of the band, while also weaving in the opinions of the younger generation who grew up during the band’s era. This multimodal approach makes use of a large collection of photographs, including rare and forgotten images, as well as vintage newspapers and periodicals that formerly recorded the band’s extraordinary voyage.

The Soul Brothers have been a prominent presence in the music industry since the mid-70s, showcasing their unique blend of Mbaqanga music. The book unfolds their narrative through the words of Moses Ngwenya, chronicling their journey from the band’s inception in 1975 by David Masondo, Tuza Mthethwa, Zenzele Mchunu, American Zulu, and Moses Ngwenya himself. Regrettably, the first four members have passed away under different circumstances, leaving behind a legacy that the surviving member holds dear.

The Soul Brothers stand among esteemed peers and counterparts in the music scene, including Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Izintombi Zesimanjemanje, Mahlathini and Mahotella Queens, Steve Kekana, and many others. As the sole active surviving Mbaqanga group from the 70s, the Soul Brothers continue to record and tour globally, bringing their electrifying performances to audiences around the world. With over 45 albums under their belt, the group’s achievements are evidenced by numerous awards and millions of albums sold, solidifying their status as one of South Africa’s top-selling musical acts.
