Review: Unforgettable May Escape with ShotLeft & South African Tourism

This past May, I embarked on an incredible adventure to Margate, KwaZulu-Natal, with ShotLeft and South African Tourism. It wasn’t your typical getaway, but a full-fledged exploration that left me with lasting memories.

CemAir provided a smooth and efficient flight from Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport, taking just under 2 hours to whisk me away. Upon landing at Margate Airport, our fantastic host, Bongi Thabede, greeted us warmly and transported us by coach to our first stop: the thrilling Wild 5 Adventures at Oribi Gorge.

While the May weather was a bit cooler (not ideal for my usual adventurous spirit!), the gorge itself was breathtaking. Wild 5 is home to the iconic Big Swing, a 55-story plunge that I’d had the pleasure of experiencing (and conquering!) the year before. The refreshing spray of water on my face as I swung, combined with the panoramic views of the rocky landscape, created a truly spiritual experience.

This trip wasn’t just about adrenaline, however. Traveling with a group of around 12-13 people turned out to be a delightful surprise. We met new people, shared stories, and forged connections that enriched the entire experience. I came to realize that group tours offer a unique way to travel and connect with others.

Next on the agenda was an epic boat ride down the Umtamvuna River, the natural border between KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape. Sipping drinks and simply admiring the beauty of nature was pure bliss. A massive shoutout to our incredible Umlazi-based tour guide, Bongi Thabede. Her exceptional service ensured we felt looked after from the moment we landed.

Evenings were filled with delicious local South African cuisine and drinks at the Packshed by Sweetdale, a gorgeous artisanal restaurant that also doubles as a wedding venue. The entire trip was an indulgent escape, with delectable food and refreshing drinks flowing freely throughout.

One particularly memorable experience was our horseback riding adventure at Trafalgar Beach on the day before our trip to Durban. Though the horse had a different plan (depositing me before reaching the ocean!), it turned into a hilarious bonding moment with the farm owner, who shared fascinating stories about his family’s business history.

This trip served as a powerful reminder of the beauty and adventure that lies right within South Africa’s borders. Exploring KwaZulu-Natal as a tourist was a revelation, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking an exciting and enriching escape, even if it’s not your typical weekend getaway.
