Discovering a Literary Haven and Historical Site
Often overlooked as a mere stopover, the Free State province offers much more than its vast landscapes. On a recent media trip organized by the Free State Gambling, Liquor, and Tourism Board, I had the privilege of exploring one such hidden gem: Bethulie.
Nestled within this charming town, the Royal Hotel Bethulie transported me to a bygone era. With its white exterior and red roof, the hotel exuded a sense of nostalgia, reminiscent of my grandmother’s home. But what truly set it apart was its extraordinary collection of books and vinyl records.
Owned by the charismatic Anthony Hocking, a renowned author and former DJ, the Royal Hotel is one of only five book hotels in the world. Boasting over 120,000 books and 80,000 LPs, it’s a bibliophile’s paradise. Hocking’s passion for literature and music is evident in every corner of the hotel, making it a unique and unforgettable experience.
Beyond its literary treasures, Bethulie also offers a glimpse into South Africa’s history. The Bethulie concentration camp was one of the largest and most notorious camps during the war. Although much of the original site has been lost, the concentration camp memorial remains a poignant reminder of the past.
My visit to Bethulie was a delightful surprise. From the enchanting Royal Hotel to the somber history of the concentration camp, this small town in the Free State left a lasting impression. It’s a testament to the rich diversity and hidden gems that South Africa has to offer.
