Swissport International AG has introduced its latest offering—the Swissport Pet Lounge—at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport. This specially designed facility is dedicated to handling the import and export of unaccompanied pets, providing a calm and comfortable environment away from the busy cargo area of the airport.
The new space is equipped with air conditioning, water service, and soothing music, all aimed at reducing stress for animals during travel. According to Khangi Khoza, CEO of Swissport South Africa, “The Swissport Pet Lounge sets a new benchmark in animal handling at an airport in South Africa, making the stay for our special travellers as relaxing as possible.”
Pet Travel: Special Regulations and Services
Not all airlines flying to South Africa allow pets to travel in the cabin with their owners. Swissport works closely with specialized animal handling agents to help passengers navigate these regulations. These agents assist with securing travel crates, processing the necessary paperwork, and advising on potential quarantine rules in destination countries.
The new lounge features a dedicated area for accepting animals and checking their documentation, along with two separate rooms where pets can wait for their flights, their owners, or their handlers.
Commitment to Animal Safety and Care
The Swissport Pet Lounge is managed by a team trained in animal care, ensuring compliance with the International Air Transport Association’s Live Animals Regulations (IATA LAR). This guarantees the highest level of safety and care for animals during their stay.
Additionally, Swissport collaborates with the South African State Veterinary Service to conduct thorough checks on all imported and exported animals, ensuring strict compliance with regulations.
This pet lounge marks a new standard in animal handling, offering pets a more peaceful and comfortable experience at OR Tambo International Airport.
