Disney+ has officially announced that Tamara Smart (“Resident Evil”) will be stepping into the role of the beloved demigod Thalia Grace in the highly anticipated second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Smart will portray the daughter of Zeus as a recurring guest star, joining series regulars Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri, Charlie Bushnell, Dior Goodjohn, and Daniel Diemer.
Season two of the Disney+ series will be based on The Sea of Monsters, the second installment of Rick Riordan’s bestselling book series published by Disney Hyperion. Known for her fearless loyalty and punk-inspired, rebellious spirit, Thalia is a crucial character in the Percy Jackson universe. Her story is one of sacrifice—she was turned into a pine tree by Zeus to save her life, becoming the magical force that protects Camp Half-Blood.
In announcing the casting, Rick Riordan expressed his enthusiasm, saying,
“Thalia Grace is one of the most important characters in the Percy Jackson universe, so the right casting was critical. Thalia is a powerful warrior, a fiercely loyal friend, and a demigod rebel with a very ‘punk’ / ‘rage-against-the-machine’ sensibility. As soon as we saw Tamara Smart play this role, we knew we had found our daughter of Zeus. She was, no pun intended, electric. Tamara puts the ‘grace’ in Thalia Grace!”
Tamara Smart’s connection to the role carries emotional significance. In season one of the Disney+ Original series, the late Lance Reddick portrayed Zeus. Coincidentally, Smart also portrayed Reddick’s daughter in a previous project. Reflecting on the importance of this connection, Smart shared:
“I’m so grateful and excited to be joining the cast of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. It’s so close to my heart. Lance Reddick and I always spoke about working together again, so it’s that much more special and important to me to play his daughter once more as Thalia, and to keep his memory alive. I feel his presence all around me and strive to make him proud on this exciting journey.”
Production Underway for a 2025 Release
Co-created by Rick Riordan and Jonathan E. Steinberg, season two of Percy Jackson and the Olympians is being filmed in Vancouver, with a scheduled debut on Disney+ in 2025. The production team includes executive producers Steinberg and Dan Shotz, alongside Riordan, Rebecca Riordan, Craig Silverstein, Albert Kim, and others.
