Pick n Pay Clothing Expands with New Flagship Store at Mall of Africa, Celebrates African Heritage

Pick n Pay Clothing has further expanded its footprint with the unveiling of its latest flagship store at Johannesburg’s Mall of Africa. This store opening marks part of an ambitious growth plan, with Pick n Pay Clothing adding 32 new stores to its network in 2024 and planning an additional 12 openings by year’s end. Many existing stores, including those in Rosebank and the Gateway flagship, have also been refreshed as part of a broad expansion strategy.

Located in one of South Africa’s largest shopping malls, the Mall of Africa store showcases a stunning design that highlights African heritage, honoring the legacy of Pick n Pay’s founder, Raymond Ackerman.

A Dynamic Shopping Experience with African Inspiration

Hazel Pillay, Executive for Pick n Pay Clothing, attributed the retailer’s success to strong market insight and creative partnerships, including a collaboration with renowned designer Gavin Rajah and emerging talent. Speaking at the store’s reopening, Pillay emphasized the unique experience each store offers, saying, “With each of the flagship store openings, we’re creating a dynamic shopping experience that goes beyond affordability.”

The store design reflects Johannesburg’s vibrant cultural landscape. Striking elements include tribal patterns on shelves, gold ceiling panels that pay homage to the city as the ‘City of Gold,’ and a fitting room space adorned with murals by local artists. Each fitting room celebrates an African country, complete with engraved national flowers, welcoming phrases in local languages, and painted wooden cutouts of each country.

Growth in Sales and Expanded Product Offerings

Pick n Pay Clothing’s momentum is reflected in its impressive 9.8% sales increase for the financial period from March to August 2024. This growth, paired with the retailer’s focus on affordable, everyday fashion, has solidified its position in the South African market. The brand has also expanded its offerings, adding a wider variety of categories, including menswear, kidswear, and an expanded school range.

As an additional incentive, FNB cardholders can now earn up to 20% back in eBucks at Pick n Pay Clothing, adding further value for customers.

The Futurewear Programme and Exclusive Collaborations

Launched five years ago with Gavin Rajah, the Futurewear programme has become a major attraction. This initiative helps young designers bring their unique brand visions to life, offering exclusive collections that are both distinctive and trendsetting. “Through the Futurewear programme, we mentor young designers, helping them bring their unique brand visions to life,” Pillay explained. Each year, Rajah also creates an affordable collection for the retailer, giving customers the chance to own designs by a high-profile designer.

Launch of the Pick n Pay Resort Collection 2024

The Mall of Africa store reopening also saw the debut of the Pick n Pay Resort Collection 2024, a limited-edition line designed by Gavin Rajah and Alexandra Avgitidis of A.M Studio. This vibrant collection, available from 2nd December 2024, features overshirts, unisex t-shirts, shorts, and swimwear with prices capped at R399,99. Rajah explained that the collection’s exclusive print draws from both Greek and Indian cultures, incorporating symbols of love, luck, and light to reflect a tapestry of shared heritage.

Sustainability at the Core

Pick n Pay Clothing continues to prioritize sustainability in its growth strategy. The Mall of Africa store was designed to meet a Level 5 Green Building Council certification and features a live green wall shaped like Africa. This green wall, planted with real flora, symbolizes the retailer’s commitment to nature. Additionally, Pick n Pay Clothing has planted over 6,000 trees at the Platbos Nature Reserve as part of its sustainability efforts.

With its unique approach to store design, commitment to sustainability, and dedication to affordable fashion, Pick n Pay Clothing is transforming South Africa’s retail landscape.
