Johannesburg is set to host a landmark celebration of one of South Africa’s most beloved cultural icons, Dr Esther Mahlangu, through the retrospective exhibition Then I Knew I Was Good at Painting: Esther Mahlangu, A Retrospective. Opening on 20 November 2024 at the Wits Art Museum (WAM), this extraordinary showcase runs until 17 April 2025 and highlights her unparalleled contributions to contemporary art over five decades.
The exhibition follows a successful debut at the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town and is brought to Johannesburg with the support of BMW Group South Africa, WAM, and the National Arts Council.
A Tribute to a Visionary
Curated by Nontobeko Ntombela, the exhibition traces Dr Mahlangu’s journey from her rural roots in Mpumalanga to international acclaim, presenting an intimate portrayal of her life and art. Through archival materials, the retrospective captures the essence of her creative genius, celebrating her role as a trailblazer who has inspired artists worldwide.
“Dr Mahlangu is a living symbol of triumph over adversity,” says Ntombela. “Her artistic approach continues to inspire younger generations and places Africa firmly at the heart of the global art conversation.”
Highlights of the Exhibition
A major highlight is Dr Mahlangu’s iconic BMW 525i Art Car, created in 1991. As the first African and first woman artist to contribute to the prestigious BMW Art Car Collection, this masterpiece symbolizes her trailblazing spirit and the global recognition of her unique style.
“Dr Mahlangu’s extraordinary legacy is a testament to her pioneering spirit,” says Thilosh Moodally, Director of Government Affairs and Communications at BMW Group South Africa. “The return of the BMW 525i Art Car to Gauteng after more than three decades is a celebration of her artistic brilliance.”
A Global Impact
Dr Mahlangu’s influence extends far beyond South Africa. Her 9m x 5m mural, unveiled during the VIP Programme for Frieze London 2024, has garnered international acclaim. Titled Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu (I am because you are), the artwork emphasizes human connection and community. This piece marked her first public mural in the United Kingdom, further cementing her status as a global artistic icon.
A Call to Celebrate
The exhibition is not only a celebration of Dr Mahlangu’s life but also a regional tribute to her ties with Gauteng and Mpumalanga. “Wits Art Museum is honoured to host this retrospective, showcasing the remarkable scope and vision in Dr Mahlangu’s work,” says Julia Charlton, Senior Curator at WAM.
Art enthusiasts from Tshwane, Mpumalanga, and beyond are encouraged to immerse themselves in this profound homage to one of South Africa’s greatest living artists.
