A Night to Remember: Celebrating Wilson B. Nkosi with Chris Walker

It’s rare for me to open my laptop on a Sunday evening, but the emotions I’m feeling now are far from ordinary. Last night was truly one for the books. T&S Platinum Concerts, a prominent black-owned company making significant strides in South Africa’s entertainment scene, celebrated 37 years of the iconic Wilson B. Nkosi. For many black households, including mine, Sunday isn’t complete without “The Love Moment” on Metro FM by Wilson B. Nkosi. It’s a cherished tradition, a family ritual that binds us through soul music.

Growing up, my father was the beacon of musical knowledge in our household. His love for soul music was infectious, seeping into our lives and becoming a shared passion. From my mother to myself, the firstborn, and my siblings, this love for music is a thread that connects us. It’s more than just a genre; it’s a family legacy.

Last night, amidst the celebration, I experienced a moment that will stay with me forever. I took a selfie with Chris Walker, a legendary American soul and R&B artist, one of my parents’ absolute favorites. The resemblance between him and my dad in the photo we took was uncanny. Chris Walker had flown all the way from America to Johannesburg to congratulate Wilson B. Nkosi on his remarkable achievement and to express his gratitude for introducing his music to South Africa. Recently, he toured South Africa with another of my favorites, Regina Belle.

Don’t I look like his daughter haha!?

For someone who isn’t easily surprised, this moment was surreal. Seeing Chris Walker sitting at a table not far from us was wild. My boyfriend, ever understanding, allowed me to embrace my inner groupie, a rare occurrence. Music is a massive part of who I am, and sharing this special moment with someone who is just as passionate about soul music made it even more extraordinary.

As I sit on the couch, continuing our Sunday tradition of soul music, my boyfriend is in the kitchen, cooking us a delicious Sunday meal—another love language of mine. This evening is a beautiful continuation of a magical night, a reminder of the power of music to connect us, celebrate our heritage, and create unforgettable memories.
