Casa Caritas emerged from the heartfelt concern of the Kempton Park community, recognizing the need for nurturing care for children with disabilities. Joan Muller, the first CEO and founder, played a pivotal role in persuading the Kempton Park City Council to allocate a house for this purpose. Initially located on Maxwell Street, Kempton Park, the institution started with three bedrooms.
As the project gained momentum, a strategic decision was made to bifurcate the institution. One arm focused on higher-functioning children, while Casa Caritas continued its mission to provide care for severely disabled children. Joan Muller’s leadership and determination propelled the establishment to secure a plot of land in Terenure, Kempton Park, provided by the city council. Over the years, the institution expanded, adding new rooms and upgrading facilities to enhance the residents’ overall experience.
Currently led by CEO Chantell Kriel, Casa Caritas accommodates 55 disabled individuals, primarily aged between 11 and 48. The facility offers a controlled outdoor environment, a recreation room, and an emergency room, allowing residents to move freely within a safe and nurturing setting. Chantell Kriel, deeply passionate about Casa Caritas, expressed how working at the facility allowed her to find her true calling in life.
Casa Caritas provides round-the-clock care to its residents, who range from mobile individuals to those confined to wheelchairs or beds. Many residents experience epilepsy, a condition managed through medication. The dedicated staff at Casa Caritas ensures residents’ well-being and comfort, providing them with daily therapy, sensory stimulation, regular meals, and medication administration.
The institution owes its success to its devoted team of 35 staff members, exemplifying qualities of compassion, empathy, and patience. The staff not only cater to the physical needs of the residents but also create a loving and supportive environment, enriching the lives of those they care for.
Looking ahead, CEO Chantell Kriel envisions a future for Casa Caritas filled with longevity and prosperity. She hopes to continue honoring the legacy set by the founders, upholding the dignity and respect that individuals with disabilities deserve. Financial support to cover operating costs and groceries remains a pressing need, emphasizing the importance of community involvement and public donations.
Casa Caritas depends on financial aid and community contributions to sustain its operations. Donations of non-perishable items and paint are always welcomed.
