Calling all culture enthusiasts! Get ready to immerse yourself in a vibrant celebration of KwaZulu-Natal’s diverse heritage at the inaugural KwaZulu World Carnival on June 29th, 2024, in Durban!
This free event, proudly sponsored by Durban Tourism and SAFA eThekwini, promises an explosion of color, music, and dance, showcasing the very essence of KwaZulu-Natal.
A Vibrant Celebration of Culture
The KwaZulu World Carnival aims to become a premier tourist attraction, rivaling the likes of Rio’s Carnival. However, with a distinct focus on showcasing the unique spirit of KwaZulu-Natal.
“We want to give attendees an authentic Zulu experience,” says Dr. Bandile Mkhize, the Carnival Chairperson.
Experience the Parade and Immerse Yourself in the Festivities
The festivities kick off with a lively parade from the Workshop to Hoy Park, happening from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. Everyone is encouraged to wear traditional clothing or costumes representing their heritage and line the streets to cheer on the participants.
The parade will feature a dazzling display of troupes from across KwaZulu-Natal, including various izigodi (Zulu dance groups), as well as international participants from eSwatini, Botswana, Zambia, and Burundi. Local groups representing the Tsonga, Basotho, and other cultures will also add to the vibrant mix.
Expect a captivating showcase of dancers, stilt walkers, brass bands, drum majorettes, and more!
Free Concert, Food Expo, and VIP Option
The celebrations culminate at Hoy Park with a free concert starting at 3:00 pm and lasting until 9:00 pm. Local music giants will headline the event, accompanied by international dance and music groups.
Tantalize your taste buds at the Carnival Food Expo, featuring a delectable array of African cuisines prepared by local and continental chefs. Food and drinks will be available for purchase, while the event itself remains free.
For those seeking a more elevated experience, a VIP option is available for purchase on-site for R300. This includes lunch and access to a cash bar.
