Decorex Cape Town Unveils Emoji-Themed Room Sets

Decorex Cape Town, a premier design exhibition showcasing the latest trends in interior decor, is taking a playful and innovative approach this year. The show, running from June 6th to 9th at the CTICC, will feature room sets uniquely designed around emojis, those ubiquitous digital icons that have become a language of their own.

Emojis Take Physical Form

This exciting concept will blur the lines between the physical and digital worlds. Prominent local designers will draw inspiration from the vibrant and expressive world of emojis to create these one-of-a-kind spaces.

“While the inspiration is emojis, the execution will be sophisticated and refined,” explains Bielle Bellingham, Executive Creative Director of Decorex Africa. “The designs won’t be overly literal, but will incorporate subtle emoji elements, showcasing the designers’ creativity and expertise.”

A Reflection of Our Times

This emoji exhibit reflects the growing trend of “phygital” experiences, where the physical and digital realms intertwine. Decorex organizers aim to demonstrate how inspiration from digital culture can enrich modern interior design, making it more relevant to today’s consumers, particularly Gen Z and Gen Alpha who are digital natives.

Translating Emojis into Design

Two design teams have taken up the challenge of translating emojis into inspiring physical spaces. Popstrukt, known for their colorful furniture with playful names, will create the “Sweet Suite” inspired by the candy emoji. This space will likely feature their signature playful aesthetic.

A Design Journey

The other design team, a collaboration between Lalegno (wooden flooring specialists), Rumour Has It (interior brand architecture), and RHi Curate, will draw inspiration from the feather and hut emojis. Their design is expected to encompass themes of nature, luxury, and sustainability.

Rumour Has It explains their design choices:

  • Feathers: They symbolize beauty, nature, and the interconnectedness of living things. The design will incorporate different parts of a feather’s anatomy, like the quill and the vanes.
  • Huts: Round hut structures are common throughout Africa, and the design will evoke a sense of home and connection to the natural world.

A Show Not to Miss

Decorex Cape Town promises to be a visually stunning and inspiring event. The emoji-themed room sets are sure to be a highlight, showcasing the innovative spirit of South African design. Be sure to attend and give them a metaphorical thumbs up (or post a thumbs up emoji) when you share your experience online!
