FlySafair, South Africa’s leading low-cost airline, has announced a new addition to its growing network of routes—direct flights between Cape Town and Windhoek, Namibia. The new route will mark FlySafair’s first regional connection out of the Mother City, with flights set to commence from the 22nd of October.
“We have been wanting to break into the Windhoek market for a while, but the barrier, until now, has been aircraft availability,” explains Kirby Gordon, the Chief Marketing Officer at FlySafair. “Having an additional aircraft that we are basing in Cape Town is now enabling us to expand into the market with a competitive fare.”
The route presents a unique opportunity for FlySafair to tap into a market that is only about 83% recovered to its pre-COVID numbers, offering plenty of room for growth and a chance to increase travel to the destination.
Typically, a ticket from Cape Town to Windhoek can range from R5,000 to over R9,000. However, in keeping with its commitment to providing safe and affordable travel options, FlySafair is offering highly competitive fares, with tickets starting at just R1,800. These tickets are already available for sale, making Windhoek a more accessible option for travelers who previously found it out of reach due to cost constraints.
The timing of this new route is also strategic, as it comes just ahead of the summer holiday season. “It will offer South Africans another option for their travel to visit family and friends. There is some good business travel on the route as well,” says Gordon. The route is designed to cater not only to South Africans but also to those keen to venture further into Africa and explore the offerings of neighboring countries.
Additionally, the new route will serve international travelers who are using Cape Town as a jumping-off point to other African destinations. “The new route will cater to overseas travellers who are using Cape Town as a jumping-off point to other African destinations,” adds Gordon.
Namibia is a country renowned for its natural beauty and diverse attractions. According to the International Trade Administration, Namibia is an attractive tourist destination, boasting natural wonders like the Namib Desert—the oldest desert in the world—the Fish River Canyon, the unique landscapes of the Skeleton Coast, and Etosha National Park, one of the largest game reserves in Africa. The Sossusvlei sand dunes, known for their striking beauty, and Namibia’s well-maintained road infrastructure further add to its appeal, drawing tourists from around the globe.
To meet the demand, FlySafair’s new Cape Town to Windhoek route will run twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays. This new connection follows a series of recent expansions by the airline, including direct flights from Cape Town and Johannesburg to the Kruger National Park, further enhancing access to South Africa’s famed natural attractions.
“The Cape Town to Windhoek route expands that drive by giving travellers a more affordable way to venture further afield and avail themselves of the rich beauty that is abundant in one of our neighboring countries,” concludes Gordon.
