This year’s DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival powered by LottoStar, which celebrates a decade of Delicious in style with a cosmopolitan fusion of sounds and cuisine, will be headlined by a trio of Grammy winners, including American multi-platinum soul singer Maxwell, Nigerian singer-songwriter Tems, and South African Afro-house hitmaker Zakes Bantwini.
The festival’s 10th anniversary edition, which will take place on September 23 and 24, 2023, at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, is expected to be a joyous occasion. A stellar lineup, which includes multi-award-winning local gospel choir Joyous Celebration and iconic US funk-soul-disco group Shalamar, will keep the party going all Heritage Day weekend. Afro-soul icon Ringo Madlingozi and outstanding local DJs Oscar Mbo, Mörda Bongs, and DJ Kent will open the Main Stage on Saturday, September 23. Then it’s time for the ladies, as the incredible DJ Lamiez Holworthy brings some old school sass to the stage (here’s what she had to say about her set).
Saturday afternoon will also be lit up by two-time Grammy-winning outfit Arrested
Development, whose trailblazing positive-minded hip-hop incorporates African influences,
making for an “arresting” blend of rhythms, flavours and sounds. Audiences are also in for a treat as fellow Grammy-winning American jazz pianist, producer and songwriter Robert Glasper sets the scene for mellow sundowners with his hip-hop-inflected compositions.
Nigerian superstar Tems’ (Temilade Openiyi) performance on Saturday night will undoubtedly be a festival high point. Tems became the first African artist to debut at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 thanks to her duet with Drake on Wait for U, which also helped the duo win the Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance. Tems most recently received Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for Lift Me Up, the song she co-wrote with Rihanna for the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack.
Rounding off Saturday’s electrifying music offering is the multi-talented local singer-
songwriter and DJ Zakes Bantwini. Affectionately known as the “King of Dance” for his
upbeat style, South Africa’s latest Grammy winner for Best Global Music Performance for
Bayethe (with Wouter Kellerman and Nomcebo Zikode) is guaranteed to get the party
pumping and turn Kyalami into one giant dancefloor.
Sunday’s Main Stage line-up sees the incomparable Joyous Celebration – South Africa’s
legendary gospel choir that is heading towards its 30 th year of unifying South Africans and
giving praise through music. Greg The Musical Maestro and Oskido will be on the decks
throughout the day to keep patrons moving and grooving. Then, British acid jazz act Incognito will take to the stage, proving just why they are regarded as such an electrifying live act with their uplifting jazz-funk sound – remember they blew us away at DStv Delicious International Food and Music Festival in 2014?
Shalamar, one of the top funk, soul, and disco bands of their generation, carries on the good vibes. They are giving a performance as part of their 40th anniversary “Friends” tour at the DStv Delicious International Food & Music Festival powered by LottoStar. Maxwell, a highly regarded performer, will provide some smooth R&B as the weekend’s events come to a close. The iconic singer has won three Grammy Awards, six Soul Train Music Awards, two NAACP Image Awards, and numerous other honors throughout the course of his distinguished career. For more than two decades, he has expertly transfixed music enthusiasts by delivering five studio albums, all of which have been deemed classics. As of right now, Maxwell is traveling to South Africa to treat Delicious customers to his wonderful music.
Remember, it’s a public holiday on Monday 25 September!
Dance music enthusiasts should spend both nights at the Drip Dance Stage, where the Scorpion Kings and friends will perform on Saturday and DJ Zinhle and company will perform on Sunday. Here, you may maintain a positive attitude while getting your body moving to the sounds of spring!
A number of precautions have been taken in preparation for this year’s event, which will mark ten years, to make sure attendees have a great time in a safe setting. More vendors on site will make it simpler for customers to buy food and drinks, parking and ride-hailing services will make it easier to arrive and depart, and all vendors now accept bank cards, all of which will result in a deliciously enjoyable feast of international culinary flavours, sounds, and sights.
