Lanseria International Airport Launches South Africa’s First Automated Domestic Boarding System

Lanseria International Airport has unveiled an innovative automated boarding gate system, “Tap and Fly,” in its domestic terminal, marking a milestone for domestic air travel in South Africa. The system, developed in partnership with FlySafair, streamlines the boarding process by allowing passengers to scan their boarding passes or QR codes at automated gates.

“This rollout represents a significant step in our journey towards becoming a SMART airport,” said Rampa Rammopo, CEO of Lanseria International Airport. “The Tap and Fly system will not only reduce boarding times but also allow our staff to focus on delivering a high standard of customer service.”

Revolutionizing Domestic Travel

Lanseria is the first airport in South Africa to introduce such technology for domestic flights, paving the way for enhanced passenger experiences. While “Tap and Fly” accelerates boarding, standard ID verification and luggage check-in procedures remain in place, ensuring compliance with aviation regulations.

Rammopo emphasized the system’s readiness, following successful trials. “Passengers can expect a smoother experience during the busy festive season,” he said.

A Step Towards SMART Airport Excellence

The automated gates are part of Lanseria’s broader SMART airport strategy, which envisions the integration of advanced technologies to elevate efficiency and security. Upcoming projects include biometric systems and self-service bag drops.

“This is just the beginning,” Rammopo noted. “In the coming years, we aim to introduce advanced technologies that enhance security and streamline processes further.”

Beyond Passenger Convenience

The benefits of automation will extend to restricted staff areas, where manual ID checks will be replaced with digital permits and biometric authentication. “The focus is on improving efficiency without compromising security,” Rammopo added.

Lanseria International Airport’s “Tap and Fly” initiative highlights its commitment to innovation and sets the stage for a smarter, more efficient future in South African aviation.
