Celebrating five decades of remarkable legacy, BMW Group South Africa has unveiled a special edition coffee table book, BMW – The Unique South African Story, published by The Vantage Corporation. This 640-page hardcover publication captures BMW’s inspiring South African journey from the establishment of its Rosslyn production plant to its influential presence today, making it the most comprehensive account of BMW’s local history to date.
BMW – The Unique South African Story takes readers on an immersive journey through the brand’s evolution, highlighting its milestones as South Africa’s first BMW production facility outside Germany. Located in Rosslyn, north-west of Pretoria, the plant began with models like the BMW 2000 SA and the iconic BMW 333i, bringing German engineering excellence to South Africa and marking a turning point for the automotive industry in the country.
From historic model launches to BMW M Motorsport’s exhilarating legacy of cars and drivers, this well-researched book features detailed accounts from BMW Group South Africa’s leaders, with reflections on the brand’s rich South African story. Johann Venter, author of the book, expresses his passion for BMW: “This book is a culmination of a lifelong passion for the BMW brand. This has led to me joining forces with one of the most ardent BMW enthusiasts I know to create something that truly reflects this heritage brand in South Africa.”
Beyond automotive accomplishments, the book highlights BMW Group South Africa’s dedication to corporate social responsibility and cultural initiatives. Readers will discover BMW’s commitment to community development, underscoring the brand’s role in building a better future for South Africa over the past fifty years.
Accompanying these stories is an extensive collection of never-before-seen archival images, news clippings, and records, offering a raw visual experience of BMW’s heritage in South Africa. “A dream that started over nine years ago has finally come to fruition,” co-author Marek Letowt shared. “It is a true BMW Group South Africa encyclopaedia, giving the reader a complete background of the exclusive cars and great people that make BMW a distinctive brand in South Africa.”
In 2023, BMW Group South Africa celebrated its 50th anniversary under the theme “50 Years an Icon.” This celebration brought yearlong festivities that highlighted the company’s transformative impact on South Africa’s economy, culture, and automotive landscape. As CEO Peter van Binsbergen commented, “We are proud to reflect on our company’s iconic history, particularly during a time that highlights South Africa’s rich and diverse cultural heritage. Moreover, we are pleased to see it preserved in this detailed publication. This book launch is a beautiful mix of nostalgia, achievement, and corporate and community intrigue.”
