The Seychelles’ Department of Tourism has taken a significant step towards a more sustainable tourism industry by expanding its Sustainable Seychelles Certification Programme. The programme, previously focused solely on hotels, now welcomes restaurants and tour operators, aiming to create a more holistic approach to environmental responsibility across the sector.
A Commitment to Sustainability
“This is a voluntary programme to recognise and promote sustainable practices across the industry,” explained Paul Lebon, Director General for Destination Planning and Development at the Tourism Department. The program offers a win-win situation for businesses and the environment. By adhering to the programme’s 24-point criteria, participants can not only reduce operational costs through efficient resource management but also attract eco-conscious travellers seeking a responsible tourism experience.
The criteria encompass a wide range of practices including waste reduction, water conservation, energy efficiency, responsible staff treatment, community engagement, and guest education on sustainable choices.
Open to All, Validated Regularly
Any licensed tourism accommodation, restaurant, or tour operator in the Seychelles can participate in the programme. The certification is valid for two years, with participants undergoing reassessments to ensure continued adherence to the standards.
A Journey Towards a Greener Future
Sherin Francis, Principal Secretary for Tourism in the Seychelles, expressed her enthusiasm for the program’s expansion: “We are very pleased to extend the benefits of the Sustainable Seychelles Certification Programme beyond accommodations… Today marks the beginning of their journey.” Recognizing the programme’s success within the hotel industry, she envisions this expansion propelling the Seychelles towards a more sustainable tourism future.
By encouraging sustainable practices across all aspects of the tourism industry, the Seychelles is setting a commendable example for other destinations seeking to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility.
