Southern Sun Hotels Take Action Against Hunger on World Hunger Day

Several Southern Sun hotels in Cape Town joined forces to fight hunger in their communities on World Hunger Day, May 28th, 2024. Their initiatives highlight the importance of collective action to address global hunger and support local residents.

Cape Sun Leads the Charge

Cape Sun spearheaded the effort, selecting Salt River School as its primary project for the year. Kicking things off on World Hunger Day, 15 volunteers served a nutritious chicken biryani meal to 650 students.

“With 120 students at Salt River School homeless and relying on the school for food, it was an obvious choice,” said Cape Sun General Manager Wayne Siepman. “We partnered with a school because that’s where we can impact future leaders.”

This initiative aligns with SA Harvest’s mission to eradicate hunger in South Africa. SA Harvest rescues perfectly good food destined for landfills and delivers it free-of-charge to those in need. They also tackle the root causes of hunger and utilize technology to maximize their impact.

Spreading the Love Throughout Cape Town

Southern Sun Newlands showed their support by aiding the U-Turn Rehabilitation Centre for the Homeless in Claremont. Volunteers distributed sandwiches, fruits, and juices, ensuring the homeless community received a meal on World Hunger Day.

“Supporting our local community is a powerful reminder of the difference we can make,” said Ruan Nieuwoudt, Southern Sun Newlands General Manager. “We hope to inspire others to fight hunger and create a food-secure future for all.”

SunSquare Cape Town City Bowl and StayEasy Cape Town City Bowl also partnered with Ladles of Love. Their team of volunteers provided 40 liters of nutritious vegetable soup to those in need.

“Everyone deserves access to healthy food and the chance to thrive,” said the hotel’s General Manager, Trevor Philander, emphasizing their dedication to the community.

World Hunger Day: A Call to Action

World Hunger Day serves as a stark reminder of the role we all play in combating hunger. Southern Sun’s efforts provided not just immediate relief, but also hope and support for the future.
