The iconic Mbaqanga group Soul Brothers from KwaZulu-Natal is set to mark their journey and musical legacy with the release of a captivating memoir titled “The Life and Times,” written by Sydney Maluleke. The book provides an intimate glimpse into the Soul Brothers’ history, music, and essence, shedding light on their rise, challenges, and indelible mark on the world of music.
The book launch will take place on September 3, 2023, at the prestigious Joburg Theatre. Moses Ngwenya, the sole surviving original member of Soul Brothers, expressed his pleasure over the book’s release. The memoir digs further into the Soul Brothers’ formation, discography, record production, the problems of losing members, and the reasons for their moniker “Kings of Mbaqanga.” The book expertly recounts this history via the viewpoint of Moses Ngwenya, co-founder of the band, while also weaving in the opinions of the younger generation who grew up during the band’s era. This multimodal approach makes use of a large collection of photographs, including rare and forgotten images, as well as vintage newspapers and periodicals that formerly recorded the band’s extraordinary voyage.
