Unveiling Rooibos’ Potential: A Groundbreaking Study Explores its Impact on Obesity and Related Conditions

Rooibos, a South African herbal infusion revered for its health benefits, is stepping into the spotlight for its potential role in combating obesity and related conditions like type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). A groundbreaking study led by Prof Elmarie Terblanche from Stellenbosch University aims to unravel the mysteries of Rooibos in a real-world setting using human subjects.

Dissecting the Effects:

This meticulously designed study investigates the health effects of Rooibos consumption in overweight or obese women. Prof. Terblanche explains, “We’re particularly interested in body composition changes, inflammation levels, glycemic control (blood sugar management), and cardiovascular fitness.”

Exploring Multiple Avenues:

The study employs four distinct groups:

  • Rooibos only
  • Exercise only
  • Rooibos and exercise combined
  • Control group

Those in the Rooibos groups will consume six cups daily for eight weeks, while the exercise group will participate in supervised high-intensity interval training (HIIT) three times a week without Rooibos. “HIIT offers a significant advantage,” Prof. Terblanche notes, “providing similar benefits to traditional 60-minute sessions in just 20 minutes.”

Currently focusing on women aged 18-40, the study will expand in mid-2025 to include women over 40 who are pre-diabetic or diabetic.

The Power of Polyphenols:

Rooibos’ richness in unique polyphenols, known for their antioxidant properties, is the key focus. While earlier studies with cell cultures and animal models showed promise, Prof. Terblanche emphasizes, “Our study is the first to examine the effects of Rooibos consumption in humans, specifically women, and in its natural tisane form.”

A Multifaceted Approach:

To gain a comprehensive picture, Prof. Terblanche’s team will conduct blood tests, body composition analyses, and treadmill fitness assessments, along with measuring inflammation and glycemic control markers. “We’ll also consider participants’ diets,” she adds, “as high carbohydrate intake could potentially affect Rooibos’ benefits. This focus on diet makes our research unique.”

Addressing a Global Challenge:

Obesity is a major risk factor for chronic diseases like T2D and CVD, contributing to several health concerns. Traditional treatments often have side effects and accessibility limitations, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

Prof. Terblanche highlights, “Rooibos, if proven effective, could offer a simpler, more accessible intervention alongside healthy eating and regular exercise, which are crucial for managing chronic conditions.”

Cautious Optimism and the Road Ahead:

While optimistic about the potential, Prof. Terblanche acknowledges the need for more long-term research. “Current recommendations suggest six cups daily, but long-term studies are needed to determine Rooibos’ effectiveness as a sustainable remedy for managing T2D and CVD.”

A Pioneering Effort:

This study signifies a significant step forward. By examining the combined effects of Rooibos and exercise, and considering dietary factors, it aims to provide actionable insights into Rooibos’ potential as a health intervention.

As the study progresses, the world awaits its findings, holding onto the possibility that this beloved South African beverage might hold the key to a healthier future.
